Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston.

A novel long forgotten and out of print for many years, it is now considered one of the most important works of 20th century American literature.  The plot revolves around Janie Crawford, a fair, independent and articulate woman who sets out to be her own person—no mean feat for a black woman in the '30s. Janie's quest for identity takes her through three marriages and into a journey back to her roots.  If you have the paperback, don’t miss the Foreword  by Edwidge Danticat.
