Community Life

Judson offers many ways to get involved in the community beyond the Sunday morning worship service. Some activities are occasional, others regularly scheduled. Because the Church has a small paid staff, much of the work that sustains our community life comes from volunteers within the community.

Adult education: From time to time special events are planned to engage adults in the community in investigating, exploring, discussing, and confronting themes and issues of interest. These might be lead by Pastor Donna Schaper, members of the community, or outside guests. Recent or current programs are "Bible Study for Amateurs" which met at Grace House, the church parsonage, "Explore the Eternal Feminine," a presentation and discussion on Mary Magdalene from a feminist perspective led by Melanie J. Johnson De-Bauffe, feminist and author, and an eight-week book reading and discussion series led by members of the congregation which met before the Sunday service.

Second Helpings: We give ourselves an extra helping of spiritual nourishment by learning, serving, and playing together outside of the normal church activities. Whether an old-timer or here for the first time, all are welcome to join in. Call the church office with ideas and to volunteer. Past Second Helping events have included attending movies, plays, and lectures, and joining other community groups for community service projects.

Judson Weekend: The Weekend, sometimes called the Retreat, is a community tradition held each September. It is a week-end in the country with Judson friends where we can have some time together to get acquainted with each other and talk about our life and ministry as the Judson community. There is a choice of informal activities and discussion opportunities and the entire community gathers for a beloved Saturday night party and a Sunday morning worship service. The 2007 Weekend is scheduled for September 14 - 16, 2007.

Congregational meals: Worshiping together, singing together, working together, deliberating together, and occasionally arguing together are common aspects of our community life. Another is eating together. The Thanksgiving shared meal (on the Sunday before the national holiday), the Christmas "Stone Soup" celebration, and the Easter shared meal are the traditional times when folks bring in food to share.
